Kids’ Harbor experienced another busy year in 2009 with a record number of children referred. Kids’ Harbor had 516 children referred to our two centers which is a 26% increase over 2008 and 53% increase since 2006. Camden County accounted for 23% of the referrals and 53% of the children were from Camden, Miller and Laclede Counties and seen at our Osage Beach office. Thirty-six percent of the children referred are from Phelps, Pulaski and Texas counties and were seen at our St. Robert office.
Eighty-four percent of the children were referred for sexual abuse, with 72% of those being female. The alleged perpetrator was a parent in 25% of those interviewed by Kids’ Harbor, 7% were a step-parent, 8% were someone the parent was in a relationship with and 19% was some other relative. That totals 59% of the perpetrator was someone that should have been caring, loving and protecting the child.
Charges were filed by a prosecuting attorney in 26% of the children interviewed by Kids’ Harbor.
Kids’ Harbor has a new Counselor/Therapist, Patty Evans who started December 1. She is currently seeing with 30-35 children and four or more parents each month. Besides meeting with children in the Osage Beach and St. Robert offices, when transportation is an issue she is sees children at their homes or school.
A re-accreditation team from the National Children’s Alliance, NCA, evaluated our Osage Beach site in October. The evaluator’s report was presented to the NCA Board of Directors at their January meeting and we were informed that Osage Beach office has been re-accredited for the next five years. Our St. Robert office comes up for re-accreditation in 2011.
Funding this past year has been adequate to meet our needs. We have been blessed with generous donations from service clubs, businesses, individuals and participation by the community in our fundraisers. The outlook for 2010 indicates Kids’ Harbor will probably need additional community financial support. One grant that funds a half time position runs out June 30. Our direct state funding, which accounts for 20% of our total budget, may need divine intervention to keep from being reduced due to the state’s current financial condition.
